The Stadio dei Pini in Viareggio Officially Inaugurated

On September 24th, the official opening ceremony of the renovated Stadio dei Pini in Viareggio took place, a multifunctional sports facility completely upgraded with innovation, sustainability, and harmony with the natural surroundings.

The event featured prominent Italian sports legends, including Marcello Lippi, Gigi Buffon, Alessandro Del Piero, Ciro Ferrara, Luciano Spalletti, Roberto Pruzzo, Eraldo Pecci, Luciano Chiarugi, and FIDAL President Stefano Mei. The evening was hosted by Sky sports journalist Alessandro Bonan, with volleyball player Veronica Angeloni as the event’s patron.

The project covers a total area of 25,000 sqm and involved a multidisciplinary team composed of:

  • Sportium, led by Technical Director Architect Giuseppe De Martino;
  • Progetto CMR, responsible for integrated design;
  • STAIN Engineering, handling MEP systems;
  • InFire, managing fire safety certification and approvals.

A Historic Venue with a Vision for the Future

Stadio dei Pini was the first stadium in Italy to feature a tartan track back in 1969. Among its historic moments is the world record in shot put set by Alessandro Andrei in 1987.

Today, after complete refurbishment, the stadium has regained national and international prominence by hosting the final of the prestigious Viareggio Cup on March 31, 2025.

Architecture and Sustainability Serving Sport

The new Stadio dei Pini was designed to harmonize with the surrounding pine forest through thoughtful architectural choices, sustainable materials, and a color palette inspired by nature.

The redevelopment included:

  • A new covered grandstand with locker rooms;
  • An uncovered grandstand;
  • A football pitch with a high-quality turf provided by Serie A groundcare specialists;
  • A prefabricated athletics track with a poured EPDM finish, allowing easy maintenance and lower management costs;
  • Service buildings and hospitality areas built to high standards, enabling the stadium to host matches up to Lega Pro level.

“We are proud of the work carried out by Progetto CMR International Group companies in renovating an iconic Italian sports facility. Our goal was to deliver a functional, sustainable, and historically rich venue accessible year-round, not just on game days,” said Gabriele Cerminara, General Manager of Progetto CMR International.

“This stadium is a true treasure of Italian sports history. We aimed to honor it through a contemporary architectural reinterpretation, equipping it with cutting-edge technologies and state-of-the-art materials,” added Giuseppe De Martino, Technical Director of Sportium.

A Model of Integrated Sports Facility Redevelopment

Today, the new Stadio dei Pini stands as a model of architectural and functional redevelopment applied to sports venues, reflecting Progetto CMR International’s commitment to creating sustainable, innovative, and community-focused spaces.
