The groundbreaking ceremony for the New Salerno Sports Arena marked the beginning of a major urban redevelopment project covering an area of approximately 42,000 square meters. The initiative is being led by Sportium, a company within the Progetto CMR International Group, specializing in the design and development of state-of-the-art sports facilities.
This major transformation will turn the area into a multifunctional hub. The project includes: A modern, sustainable, multipurpose Sports Arena (5,000 sqm), designed by Sportium, with a capacity of up to 5,500 spectators for sports events and 5,660 for concerts. It will host national and international sporting, cultural, and youth-oriented events. The “Piazza dello Sport”, featuring wide green spaces, a playground area, and an underground parking facility. A Complementary Building that will house commercial spaces and support functions for the Arena. Surface-level parking in the former Palapark area.
All internal spaces will comply with the highest international standards (such as FIBA and FIVB), with separate access routes for athletes, spectators, media, and technical staff.
The New Salerno Sports Arena has been designed to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency and accessibility and is distinguished by its symbolic architecture. The building’s façade features a metal mesh skin made of expanded aluminum sheets, giving the compact and monumental volume a sense of lightness and dynamism, accentuated by natural light reflections.

As stated by Architect Giovanni Giacobone, Managing Partner of Sportium:
"We envisioned the Salerno Arena as both a symbolic and functional piece of architecture: a new urban landmark where environmental sustainability and audience experience are essential. Its form, materials, and spatial layout stem from the idea of inclusiveness and openness—a living, accessible space, designed not only to host high-profile events but also to be part of everyday life.”
The entire redevelopment project is funded through the Development and Cohesion Fund (FSC) and has been developed by a Temporary Grouping of Professionals (RTP) led by Sportium, which includes: Vitruvius Engineering, SAG S.r.l. Giancarlo Scognamiglio Architettura, New Engineering, Architect Giuseppe De Martino, Campagnuolo Progetti and Gaia Campagnuolo, GEOMED S.r.l.
The Municipality of Salerno serves as the project client.
